This policy explains what personal data BitcoinInsights collects when you use bitcoininsights.io (the “site”), why we collect it, how long we keep it and what rights you have. We aim to collect as little personal data as possible. You can read the site without creating an account or telling us who you are.
1. Who is responsible for your data
The data controller is the private operator of BitcoinInsights, based in the United States. For any privacy question or request, contact us at contact@bitcoininsights.io.
2. What we collect and why
When you visit the site
Like every website, our servers receive technical information each time a page loads: your IP address, browser type, device type, the page requested, the referring page and the date and time. Our hosting provider records this in server logs. We use it to deliver pages, keep the site secure, block abusive traffic and fix technical problems.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a secure and working website (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
When you leave a comment
If you comment on an article, we collect the name, email address and optional website you enter, the comment itself, your IP address and your browser details. Your name, website and comment are shown publicly. Your email address and IP address are never published. We use them to moderate comments, fight spam and contact you about your comment if needed.
WordPress, the software the site runs on, may create a scrambled version of your email address (a hash) and send it to the Gravatar service, run by Automattic Inc., to check whether you have a Gravatar profile picture to display next to your comment. Gravatar’s privacy policy is available at automattic.com/privacy.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a moderated comment section (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). If you tick the box to save your details for next time, we store them in cookies on your device based on your consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR).
When you contact us or send a submission
If you email us or use our contact or submissions pages, we receive your name, email address and whatever you choose to include in your message, such as an article pitch, writing samples or links to your work. We use this only to reply to you and deal with your request.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in answering messages (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR), or steps taken at your request before agreeing to publish your work (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR).
3. What we do not do
We do not sell your personal data. We do not use your data for automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18, and the site is not directed at children.
The site’s live data, including the price chart, exchange prices and network figures, is fetched by our own server from public sources such as exchange APIs and mempool.space. Your browser does not connect to those services when you view the data, so they do not receive your IP address. The site’s fonts are hosted on our own server for the same reason, so no request is sent to Google Fonts.
4. Who we share data with
We share personal data only with service providers who help us run the site, and only as far as needed for that purpose:
- Bluehost (Newfold Digital Inc.), our hosting provider, which stores the site and its server logs
- Automattic Inc., for the Jetpack plugin, which provides security, performance and visitor statistics features, and for the Gravatar service described above
We may also disclose data where the law requires it, or to protect our rights, our readers or the public, for example in response to a valid court order.
5. International transfers
Some of our service providers are based in the United States or process data there. When personal data is transferred outside the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we rely on the safeguards the law provides, such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses or the provider’s certification under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
6. How long we keep data
- Server logs: for the limited period set by our hosting provider for security and troubleshooting
- Comments and their data: for as long as the comment stays on the site, or until you ask us to delete it
- Emails and contact messages: for up to 24 months after the conversation ends
- Article submissions that we do not publish: for up to 12 months after our decision
7. Your rights
Under the GDPR and the UK GDPR, you have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you and receive a copy
- have inaccurate data corrected
- have your data deleted, or its use restricted, in certain circumstances
- object to our use of your data where we rely on legitimate interests
- receive your data in a portable format where we process it based on consent or a contract
- withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting what we did before you withdrew it
To use any of these rights, email contact@bitcoininsights.io. We will reply within one month. We may ask you to confirm your identity before acting on a request.
You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority. As BitcoinInsights is based outside the EU, you can complain to the data protection authority in the EU country where you live or work. In the UK, the authority is the Information Commissioner’s Office.
8. Security
The site is served over an encrypted HTTPS connection, access to the site’s admin area is restricted, and the software is kept up to date. No method of sending or storing data online is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect your data against loss and unauthorised access.
9. Cookies
How the site uses cookies is explained in our cookie policy.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle personal data, for example by adding a newsletter or advertising service, we will update this policy and change the “Last updated” date at the top of the page.
11. Contact
For any question about this policy or your data, email contact@bitcoininsights.io. Our terms and conditions cover the other rules for using the site.
